Casisano Colombaio
Nestled in the surrounding hills on the south side of the town of Montalcino, Casisano Colombaio creates some of Italy’s finest wines. Brunello di Montalcino, a legend that continues to build in the minds of discerning consumers, is derived from the splendid Sangiovese Grosso. This Brunello producer creates a masterpiece each vintage from the two vineyards that lend their name to the label. Colombaio, near the estate halfway down the hill of Montalcino, and Casisano, to the southeast, are planted to 100% Sangiovese Grosso.
Brunello has a relatively short history for being so popular. Sangiovese Grosso has long been cultivated in these hills, but Brunello as we know it today truly reached international stature until after the ‘70s. The wines of today are distinctive, complex, and bold. Casisano Colombaio produces wines of particular complexity, as the two vineyards have different soil profiles. While the Colombaio vineyard provides complexity, the Casisano vineyard provides the power, as the soils there are sandier. It is truly a pleasure to taste the wines of this town, and Casisano Colombaio is producing some of the finest wines of the region.
We import three wines from Casisano Colombaio: Brunello di Montalcino, Brunello Riserva, and Rosso di Montalcino, a great value and interesting way to experience Sangiovese Grosso. Visiting Casisano Colombaio is a real treat. Riccardo Ciarpella, son of proprietor Tatiana Schwarze, provides a delightful look into the operations of a very serious producer. The surrounding hills provide the perfect setting to enjoy this most wonderful of Tuscan reds, and the food of the region is sure to please. Wild boar, cinghiale, is the perfect pairing for Brunello. The ragu di cinghiale, served over pappardelle, is one of the best meals to be had in Italy, and there’s no better wine than Brunello di Montalcino to enjoy alongside.
