The quintessentially Tuscan wines of Fattoria La Ripa are the very height of quality and tradition. Located in the heavily forested area between San Donato in Poggio and Castellina in Chianti (both near Florence), this Chianti Classico producer creates wines from Sangiovese and Cannaiolo under the “Governo” method. The Governo method is a long practiced Tuscan tradition and serves to soften the acidity of wines created from Sangiovese.
Fattoria La Ripa is a most interesting estate, in that it was once owned by Antonio Maria di Noldo Gherardini, the father of Monna Lisa, thought to be of the famed Leonardo da Vinci painting, “La Gioconda.” Fattoria La Ripa has been producing wines on this estate since 1940, and has always focused on estate bottled Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva. La Ripa also produces a “super Tuscan,” which is named Santa Brigida. Santa Brigida is an estate produced blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French and American oak barrels. The wines of Fattoria La Ripa are consistently praised in the worldwide press, the Santa Brigida garnering 90+ points in the Wine Spectator for every vintage thus far rated in the 21st century. The focus on tradition gives these wines a more “old world” flair than our other Chianti Classico producer, Canonica a Cerreto. Both styles are interesting, and can be easily identified by discerning consumers.
Pick up a bottle of Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Santa Brigida. Get a feel for the wines of Fattoria La Ripa. Examining the differences between these wines, especially when compared with our Canonica a Cerreto wines, is a great pleasure.
