Best known for the beautiful canals of Venice, this region teems with fish from the Adriatic, rice from the Po, Adige, and Piave river plains, and wild mushrooms and game from the Alps. Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) is the largest lake in Italy and offers a major tourist destination in a picturesque area at the foot of the Alps.
Veneto produces large quantities and a wide variety of wines. With so many wines and a lot of variety, there is much to know about Veneto wines. The most popular types of wine in the Veneto are Soave, Valpolicella, Amarone, and Bardolino. Both Pinot Grigio and Prosecco have Veneto IGT designations and some of the biggest names in Pinot Grigio and Prosecco come from here. Be wary of mass produced wines from the Veneto, as there are several of these imported into the U.S. Small production, high quality wines do exist here, but they can sometimes be more difficult to find outside of Italy.
