Tips

Is that a grape?

Italian wines may be called by their grape name, their regional designation, or a proprietary name (a name the winemaker has given to that particular wine).  Chianti for example is the name given to wine following the rules of the DOCG in the Chianti zone, but it is made from Sangiovese and a few other varietals, depending on the producer.  Here are a few examples:

  • Barolo: a DOCG designation, made from Nebbiolo grapes
  • Verdicchio: a grape
  • “Le Capannelle”: a proprietary name
  • Brunello di Montalcino: a DOCG designation, made from Sangiovese grapes
  • Orvieto: a DOC designation made from a combination of specific grape types
  • “Sandiavolo” a proprietary name
  • Barbera: a grape
